Every October, Hong Kong's vibrant energy shifts to the infectious rhythm of Oktoberfest. Cheers of "Prost!", Bavarian brass bands, and clinking steins of beer mark this unique celebration. Since 1992, Hong Kong Oktoberfest has brought German revelry to Asia.

 

Early Days and the Marco Polo Touch (Early 1990s)

 

In the early 90s, Hong Kong was a global hub, but something was missing – a celebration that was earthy, communal, and fun. The idea to bring the spirit of Germany's famous Oktoberfest to this dynamic city took hold. Early collaborations, potentially involving iconic venues like the Marco Polo Hotel, helped establish a sense of international sophistication for this nascent Bavarian tradition. The goal was to share authentic German warmth and good cheer.

 

First Celebrations (1992)

 

In 1992, this idea became a reality. A group of beer and celebration enthusiasts launched the first Hong Kong Oktoberfest. It was a modest, spirited gathering designed to introduce locals and expatriates to this German tradition. Imagine a tent filled with long tables, the smell of sausages and pretzels, and the sound of oompah music. It was a new and exciting experience that was well-received.

 

Growth and Evolution (Mid-1990s - Early 2000s)

 

The Hong Kong Oktoberfest quickly grew in popularity. Word of mouth and a desire for unique cultural experiences fueled its momentum. The event expanded, often moving to larger venues. The food offerings diversified with more authentic German dishes, and the entertainment became more polished, often featuring imported Bavarian bands. The sense of community strengthened, with many returning year after year, making Oktoberfest a cherished tradition for both expatriates and locals wanting to explore new festivities.

 

A Resilient Tradition: COVID Hiatus and Triumphant Return (2000s - Present)

 

By the 2000s, Hong Kong Oktoberfest was a well-established event, a highlight of the city's social calendar. Thousands attended, drawn by authentic German beer, food, music, and an unforgettable atmosphere. This cultural bridge, fostering appreciation for German heritage, was temporarily paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the event ceasing during those challenging years.

 

However, the spirit of Oktoberfest proved resilient. In 2023, a triumphant return was orchestrated by Chef's Market and Stormies, in partnership with Central Market, bringing back the much-loved Die Notenhobler band to Hong Kong. This marked a significant moment, reigniting the festivities after the hiatus.

 

This year, 2026, marks the fourth year that Die Notenhobler have graced the Hong Kong Oktoberfest stage since their post-COVID comeback, solidifying their role as beloved performers and underscoring the enduring appeal of the celebration.

 

Since its start in 1992, Hong Kong Oktoberfest has become a beloved institution. It reflects Hong Kong's spirit – a welcoming city that embraces diversity and knows how to celebrate.
